Pearson Pairs Science Textbooks With Web-Based Reading Comprehension
and Writing Tool, Creating Powerful Cross-Curricular Instructional
Program
Students in Grades 4-6 Will Learn Science, Build Reading Skills
With Scott Foresman Science and Summary Street
BOULDER, Colo. and GLENVIEW, Ill. - Oct. 3, 2007
- Now students in grades 4-6 will build reading comprehension skills
while learning science with Pearson's integration of Summary Street®,
its innovative Web-based reading comprehension and writing instruction
tool, with the company's Scott Foresman's Science 2008 textbook series.
After reading lessons from the science textbooks, students will use
Summary Street to write summaries in their own words and receive
immediate feedback. With Summary Street, students develop a skill that
good readers naturally possess - the ability to summarize what they read.
"This new edition of our widely respected science textbook series
includes cross-curricular connections that link reading and science
skills in every chapter," said Lynda Cloud, senior vice president
for science products at Pearson. "Its potential for improving
student learning becomes even more powerful when it is coupled with
Summary Street, which will help students build critical reading skills
while learning science concepts."
Summary Street evaluates student summaries using Pearson's
state-of-the-art Knowledge Analysis Technologies™ (KAT) engine,
which automatically evaluates the meaning of text by examining whole
passages. It measures student writing by comparing it with the actual
content of the Scott Foresman science lesson and provides feedback on
how well students have captured the main ideas in their summaries. Plus,
Summary Street offers students feedback on copying from the lesson,
spelling, redundancy and relevancy.
"One of the unique things about Summary Street is that it can be
used to support reading instruction across the curriculum," said
Lynn Streeter, president of the Knowledge Technologies group of Pearson.
" By using this online tool to summarize what they read in the
Scott Foresman Science textbooks, students are reinforcing what they are
learning while continuing to develop their reading comprehension
abilities.
Five years of classroom research at the University of Colorado-Boulder
revealed that students build strong reading comprehension and writing
skills when they use Summary Street. In one study, students who used
Summary Street saw significant improvement in reading comprehension
scores on the state assessment. This independent research demonstrates
that when students practice their summarizing skills in an online
environment where they receive immediate, engaging, quality feedback,
they build strong literacy skills.
